Sowell Class Armed Medium Freighter

The Sowell Class Armed Medium Freighter is pretty typical of the cargo ships running the space lanes. She’s big enough to deliver a seasons worth of supplies to an outbound colony, with her fusion plant and Type 3 Ion Engines she has the legs to make a long voyage in a relatively short amount of time. She has the weaponry to defend herself from any run of the mill ship jackers and a perhaps a single pirate ship.

The Sowell Class is 280 meters in length. Her standard crew is twelve, and she can run 8-10 months at a time without having to replenish reactor mass.

These mid-cap ships are the backbone of interstellar commerce. The big freight companies are usually too scared to head off the beaten path to the Outer Rim or the Outback due to piracy concerns. So, these smaller, more agile ships pick up the slack.

Pirate Assault Frigate

Armed spacecraft have been around since the mid 21st century. The first civilian cargo freighters still had their original hull paint when someone bolted auto-cannons on the hull and attacked and boarded another ship. Soon after, rail guns and plasma cannons became factory add-ons. Of course, some governments moved in to curb the availability of such weapons to the general public. And as always, people ways to skirt (or break) those laws.

There are a few “outlaw shipyards” that operate way out in unregulated space. The most notorious is the Morningstar Shipyards in Free Port. However, there are at least a dozen others that are capable of building capital ships.

When unsanctioned warships started attacking cargo ships in the Outer Rim the Alliance and the Empire both started paying close attention to piracy.

An Alliance senator called them “a game changing threat to the outer rim.” An Imperial Admiral said “these bloody pirates are getting bloody hard to kill!”
